Geography prepares our pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of the world and face the challenges that will shape society and the environment locally, nationally and globally.

Our Geography curriculum is inspired by the school’s naturally beautiful surroundings, which is continually nurtured by the caring local community. This environment inspires and engages our pupils, which then promotes curiosity and wonder about the world that they live in. The environment and the teaching collaboratively create knowledgeable, skilful and responsible citizens that care about the future of our planet. Our aim is that children become critical learners which will prepare them for life in the 21st century.

As ‘confident learners’, we intend to provide our children with an extensive range of geographical knowledge and vocabulary, resulting in them being able to investigate and communicate their own knowledge and opinions confidently about the world we live in.  In a changing world, pupils need to be equipped with the knowledge of modern day contemporary challenges and sustainable futures, within the local area and beyond. We want to ensure that our learners are well prepared to step out into modern society with knowledge, enthusiasm and compassion about the world they live in. By gaining knowledge throughout our curriculum, it will teach the children to have appreciation, ownership and responsibility to look after our planet and show respect towards others.

As ‘joyful learners’, we intend to stimulate interest, enjoyment and a sense of wonder about the variety of places and environments within the world. We want to fascinate and inspire our pupils about the beauty and the extraordinary forces of the earth. To do this we deliver a rich and exciting curriculum which stimulates the children in their thinking so that we maximise on their enjoyment of Geography.  Through a sense of understanding and respect of the world around us, the children will also experience the curriculum through offsite trips and by welcoming visitors into our school.

As ‘Global Learners,’ we intend to encourage their passion in exploring and understanding the world in which they live. We want pupils to understand the impact they can have on a global scale and who are able to make synoptic links to demonstrate their understanding of a wide range of geographical ideas.  Our curriculum encourages the children to show empathy and a true understanding about key recent and evolving topics. We aim to provide an education for a generation of pupils to have an awareness of the issues our planet faces, including climate change. The ultimate aim is to create young geographers who are prepared with the concepts and skills to be able to embark on a future in our evolving world. This includes showing respect, love and a strong sense of stewardship to care for this wonderful planet we live on. 

The teaching and learning of Geography in our school will provide:

  • An excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like.
  • An excellent understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected and how much human and physical environments are interrelated.
  • An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Fluency in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills and use effective analytical and presentational techniques.
  • The ability to reach clear conclusions and develop a reasoned argument to explain findings.
  • Significant levels of originality, imagination or creativity as shown in interpretations and representations of the subject matter.
  • Highly developed and frequently utilised fieldwork and other geographical skills and techniques.
  • A passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.
  • The ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment.
