Music at Lady Katherine is all about expression, confidence, enjoyment, joy, celebration and performance. Singing in assemblies, classrooms and church is so important for our school community and we strive to make musical experiences inclusive and global at all times.  A steady progression plan is built into our scheme to ensure consistent musical development. Through this, we ensure that we are fulfilling the aims for musical learning stated in the National Curriculum.

‘All pupils perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians’. National Curriculum 2014

Examples of musical styles from different times and places are explored through listening, performing and composing activities. Examples include vocal melodies from Medieval times, Tudor court music, romantic ballet music, twentieth century pop, as well as traditional and classical forms from across the globe.

At Lady Katherine, we want children to be actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and whole body actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create their own and others’ music.

Music at Lady Katherine has a high profile and encourages our pupils to be confident performers and active, engaged learners. Teachers adapt the lessons and personalise them for the needs and interests of their class, using their own creativity and strengths to create inspiring, engaging lessons.

Aims for music at Lady Katherine:

  • Pupils use music as a vehicle for personal expression and individuality.
  • Lessons are engaging and active and include listening, reflecting, singing, movement e.g. whole body actions, body percussion and playing classroom instruments.
  • Lessons are inclusive, global and joyful.
  • Lessons involve performance and enable pupils to grow in confidence and encourage evaluation of themselves and others.
  • Music is used for celebration, joy and sharing with our community.
